McQueen made his acting debut in a cameo role on the science fiction television program Threshold.

He made an appearance in seven episodes of the WB series Everwood.
Later, he made his film debut in Minutemen, a Disney Channel film.
Then, in 2009, he was cast as Jeremy Gilbert on the popular television series The Vampire Diaries. Additionally, he played Jake Forestor in the horror film Piranha 3D.
The movie was a remake of the Piranha movie from 1978. Despite the conflicting reviews, it was regarded as a commercial success.
