American politician Pramila Jayapal has been Washington's 7th congressional district's representative since 2017.
She represents the majority of Seattle and a few King County suburbs as a member of the Democratic Party. From 2015 to 2017, Jayapal served as the senator for the 37th legislative district in Washington.
She is the first Indian-American woman to hold a representative position in the US. She is the first female representative for the district and the first Asian American to hold federal office in Washington.
Jayapal worked as an immigrant advocacy organization OneAmerica's executive director from 2007 until 2012 before transitioning into electoral politics.
She was born and raised in Seattle. She founded the organization, originally called Hate Free Zone, after the September 11 attacks.
Jayapal co-chaired the Congressional Progressive Caucus from 2019 to 2021, henceforth serving as chair. She serves on both the Judiciary Committee and Budget Committee.
