Despite receiving scholarships for both football and soccer, he chose to play soccer. He was selected by the Chicago Fire with the fourth overall choice in the 2000 Major League Soccer draft.
He continued to play for the team after that until he was moved. After his side won the title match and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, he was voted MLS Rookie of the Year at this time.
He was then regarded as one of the best professional defenders in the US at the time. In addition to his job in the United States, he has professional playing experience abroad.
